Sexual Scripts
I read a book over the summer called "For Young Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa Rice that talked about what guys really think when it comes to girls. It was really interesting actually because they got their information from focus groups and quoted men throughout the book. When we mentioned acceptable sexual behaviors in class, a part of the book immediately came to my mind. They proposed to the men in the survey that if a girl in tightly-fitted clothing with a nice body walked to the front of a classroom to do a math problem, what would they be thinking? All of the boys had pretty funny answers, but all of them struggled to focus solely on the math problem. The authors claimed that the boys couldn't control being visual, so girls should try to dress more conservatively to gain respect rather than lust from men. They viewed the men's visual characteristic as an acceptable sexual behavior because they simply could not control it.
