Chapter 11

1) Chapter 11 is about deciding to become a parent or not, and all of the things that need to be thought about while making this decision. The first section talks about different ways to consider having children involving different types of coupes. Some of the types it listed were planners, acceptance-of-fate, ambivalent, and yes-no couples. Next, it talked about decisions about how many children couples want to have, once they decide they want to. Next, there was a section about waiting a while to have kids, and why people are choosing to do this. Infertility was the next topic. As a result of this, the next part was about adoption. Other options to deal with infertility were in the next section. This included medical and technical solutions, so a couple might be able to have a kid of their own. The next part was about abortion. And, last, the book discussed choosing not to have children.

2) One thing I found interesting was how the one section said that people who get abortions don’t have any greater mental health problem risks than normal mothers do postpartum. It said that extra sadness after abortions usually comes from some other part of life. I just thought this was strange because I think most people usually associate abortion with depression afterwards.

3) One question I had, which may be a little controversial, is what everyone thinks about “morning after pills”? In the book, it talked about a debate about them being contraceptives or abortifacients. I was wondering what people thought about this, and if they thought there was a way to come up with a “right” answer to this debate, maybe thorough some kind of testing or something?

  1. Morning after pills is quite controversial, but to me it depends on the beliefs of the person taking or not taking them. To some, it is early abortion while to others, it is contraceptive safety net. Personally, i dont really see anything wrong with it.
