Chapter 15: Separation and Divorce

Chapter 15 focuses on what happens when families break apart. The chapter especially focuses on separation and divorce. Some of the topics covered in the chapter include the statistics for divorce and separation(rates of divorce over time, which parent gets custody, how many marriages end in divorce, separation and divorce, or include some sort of reconciliation process). The stages of divorce is mentioned, as well as child support, and how parents move on and create new lives afterward.

Some attention is also brought to marriage counseling, both to try to prevent divorces from happening in the first place and to help make divorce a less expensive and painful process.

Some things that were brought to my attention were the different laws of divorce in foreign countries. I imagine divorce isn't a very popular topic within the borders of a country, let alone outside of them. Many of them feel unfair, but I guess that's partly cultural differences talking.

I was also really surprised that some people are trying to tighten divorce laws, even with knowledge of bad relationships getting more and more adversarial. I imagine they have good intentions--they probably believe it will be better for children. However, they don't seem to consider the harmful unintended consequences.

1. How do you think child support should be handled(legal, personal, etc)?

  1. I appreciate your work so much! All these topics are extremely important and shouldn't be a taboo in modern society! I'm sure you'll agree with me that fear of what the abuser will do to the woman or their children often keeps married victims from filing for divorce. However, in this case divorce is a must! In case you are planning your divorce budget and are interested in average divorce cost in various US states, you may read this article.
