Chapter 14

Summary:

In Chapter 14 we learned about:

Types of IPV:
• Physical abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Emotional abuse

- Women are more likely to be victims of IPV
- When IPV victims survive an assault, women are more likely than men to report serious psychological distress

Tendencies of male and females abusers:
• They are young
• Poor
• Unemployed
• Cohabitating
• Separated
• Have a bad addiction to drugs and alcohol
• Witnessed a parent (usually father) or male abused someone in the family or someone in an intimate relationship

Marital rape- is a violent act that the husband forces his wife to have sex with him.

- Nationally, 25% of wife’s have been raped by their husband
- Very few women report the rape, but when women do report the martial rape the husbands are rarely prosecuted
- The reason why the husband may not be prosecuted is due to lack of evidence.
The well-known theory of domestic violence:
• Phase 1- The tension-building phase
• Phase 2- The acute battering incident
• Phase 3- Calm

The cycle of violence can result in women being:
• Depressed
• Loses her self esteem
• Feels that she is unable to get help
• Feels that she can not escape the abusive relationship

- Some women that are being abuse never leave because they feel that their husband will change and even though they get beaten they still love the abuser.

- Here are some other reasons why women stay with the abuser:
• Negative self-concept and low self-esteem
• Hard times with the economy and homeless
• Need for child support
• Shame or guilt
• Blame toward themselves
• Fear
• There home is like a prison

- On page 391 the book provides warning signs of intimate partner abuse and violence

- When women abuse men the man will be less likely to report the abuse due to embarrassment
- Women are 10 times more likely to experience injuries due to domestic violence than men
- Intimate partner violence has negative affects on both men and women. However, men can be more controlling with a variety of situations over a longer period of time.

Child maltreatment- is when a broad range of behaviors that place a child in serious danger. Some examples are physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional abuse.

- Usually children could be a victimized to more that one type of child maltreatment. The most common type is neglect.
- Approximately about 80% of people that abuse children are the child’s own parents (more than half are mothers).
- The rate of homicides in infant deaths has doubled and that is the leading cause of death in infants.

Reasons why adults abuse their children:
• Substance abuse
• Stress
• Poverty
• Partner abuse
• Divorce
Other examples are:
• Growing up in a violent home
• Not have a good mother or father
• Experience abuse
• Early pregnancy

Problem that children face from child abuse:
• An array of psychological and social issues
• Emotional problems
• Headaches
• Bedwetting
• Chronic constipation
• Problems with communicating
• Learning disabilities
• May show more aggression than other kids from non violent families

- Page 398 has a Table 14.3 that has a good explanation of signs of child abuse

Most common forms of sibling abuse:
• Name calling and ridiculing each other
• Degrading each other
• Intimidation
• Torturing or killing a pet
• Destroying personal possessions

Why people abuse and neglect the elderly:
• Living arrangements
• Social isolation
• Alcohol abuse
• The caregiver is not healthy
• Financial troubles and medical expenses
• Personality conflicts

Interests/ Unusual Items Learned:

Chapter 14 went into great detail about abuse. I was disheartened to learn that people of all ages, races, and genders have to deal with this kind of mistreatment.

Discussion:

I wanted to talk about eating disorders. I am studying to be a nutritionist. I watch I used to be fat on mtv. When I watch that show I can tell those kids have more issues than just an eating disorder. They have some kind of family issue with one of their parents or they are having trouble making friends so they turn to home schooling.

In my personal opinion I think that children are having a hard time with obesity because they are not getting enough exercise time in. They turn to electronics instead of going outside and playing like I did when I was growing up. Also, President Busch cut back gym time in school so children can get more time for academic learning.

I know first Lady Michelle Obama is trying to take nutrition in a positive direction. I noticed that people are having a hard time adjusting to change in healthier eating habits. I did not see anything listed in the book on things being done to prevent obesity or how to choose healthier food options for you and your family. What do you think can be done to improve our society from depression, and obesity?
