9/12's discussion
Yesterday during lecture when we were discussing the modern nuclear family being closer than the extended family, it hit me that this could have happened because of the immigration that occurred. I feel like the longer a family has been established in a new country, the more self sufficient the family and individuals become. When one first establishes a home in a new country, they are starting from scratch, therefore they need everyone in that family to help in any way they can including working so that they can survive. The fact that everyone's income in a family would be placed into a pot, so to speak, would make the extended family closer because they need each other to survive. Therefore, the longer a family has been working and together, eventually they will be able to save money, enabling the individuals to be more self-sufficient and the family members to grow distant so that they can focus more on the nuclear family.
