Chapter 5 Reading

In this chapter of the book the key focuses are socialization and gender roles. The chapter begins with the author discussing various differences between males and females, then goes on to tell why these differences cause the major gender roles that have existed in the past and even into the present. While doing this he speaks of the difference between two terms, "sex" and "gender", which I thought was very interesting. It tells how "sex" refers specifically to the biological factors of a person, while "gender" deals with attitudes and other behavioral traits that might effect a person. He goes on to speak about how nature has shaped gender roles and how gender roles differ due to a number of variables. Through this he goes on to touch on how an individual, or even a society, learns gender roles, which was also a very interesting part of the chapter. He even speaks on how in today's society gender roles are very much different than they have been in the past and why they have changed like they have.

I thought that an interesting part of this chapter was the section where the author described the difference between "sex" and "gender" because this was the first time that I have seen it broken down in such a way. He makes clear the differences between the two, and makes it very easy to understand with his descriptions.

My question is seeing how much gender roles have changed since the past so strongly, how much more can they change until gender roles are somewhat irrelevant? Of course gender roles will always be evident, but when will it be the accepted standard for a man and woman in the same house to make the same amount of money or contribute to the family the same amount and it not be considered out of the oridnary for a woman to be just a strong force in the family and the male "father figure."
