Chapter 5

1) The first thing in the book was myths about the female and male gender similarities and differences. The next section discussed the well-known nature versus nurture debate. Next, there were several explanations of why gender roles differ. Then it talked about how we learn gender roles. Then the traditional views and roles of gender were next. Then there was a discussion about gender roles specifically for adults. And, the last section was global variations in gender roles.

2) There were some very interesting things brought up in this chapter. One thing was how they compared how people describe the same types of behaviors for men and women differently. And, often, there is a more positive correlation with things for men. Another thing that I thought was good was the quote on pages 122-123 about the “help wanted” ad a woman wrote for her husband. It really showed how much some men expect their female partners to do. Regarding the political field, I thought it was a good point that in the last election the media would refer to Hillary Clinton by her first name, but never Barack Obama or John McCain. This sort of shows that they didn’t show her as much respect as the men she was competing against.

3) One question that I had while reading this chapter was about the differences between the percentages of women abused in different countries. There is a broad range of reported abuse, stretching from 13% to 80% of women. It made me wonder, is there something that could be done in the countries with higher abuse rates to protect the women there? What are these countries doing wrong that there is so much violence? How is it that there is such a big difference around the world?
