Summary:
Chapter 1 discusses the dynamics of the changing family. The chapter starts with defining what a family is and mentions specific examples, such as the nuclear or traditional family. The family is changing, and today there are so many different types of family other than the traditional family, such as single parents (do not have a partner), adoption families, extended families, and families without children. The chapter goes on to talk about how many factors, from emotion support and socialization and social class, influence and are changing ideas about the family. Also, the book discusses the ideas of different cultures and societies affecting families. Ideas of polygamy and monogamy are mentioned in explaining families and kinship. Religion, gender, ethnicity, culture, social movements, and socioeconomic status are all briefly mentioned and described in the chapter to further explain an introduction to what a family is.
New Material Learned:
Something new that I learned from this chapter was the ideas of endogamy and exogamy.
Questions:
A question I want to know is regarding more information about the impact of the increasing trend of women working full-time in the work force; how does this affect the family, and how has the idea of the family changed in recent decades?
-Matthew Sniscak
I think you have a very good question in the regards of wanting more information about women in the work force and how this affects the everyday life of the family. I think women in the work force just keep increasing and increasing in our society and I think some people do not know how to take it. I would be very interested in learning more about this topic. I would also be curious to get some opinions about this as well. How do men view women in the workforce? Or even, how do women view other women in the workforce?
