1. In this chapter, I read about the benefits of theoretical knowledge and quick overviews of eight theoretical perspectives used to study the family. I also read about different methods for conducting research and some ethical issues.
2. One interesting thing that I read was the description of the Ecological system. I had seen environmental factors raised in other systems, but I had never seen one devoted to studying them.
3. In the theoretical section, it seems like many of the criticisms leveled at the different systems are focused not on the systems themselves, but on those who use them. This is especially apparent when the author mentions areas of research that aren’t covered by the system. In the Ecological section, Benokratis says that nontraditional families haven’t been addressed, and counts it as a flaw to the ecological point of view. However, this only means that someone hasn’t thought to examine the topic yet. Conflict theory originally only considered material factors as “means of production”. However, Pierre Bourdieu expanded the theory into the cultural realm and established that the “means of production” could be immaterial when he talked about “cultural capital”.
