The Movie Paycheck and its Ability to see into the Future

Although I think everyone can agree that the movie Paycheck, which was produced in 2003, staring Ben Affleck is not the best movie of the time, I think the concept of being able to see into the future is something that can be related to this course. The machine that Affleck’s character produces gives the company the ability to see the future that could eventually lead to nuclear war. My thoughts about this movie can be related to the family because it makes me question not only the significance of war on a family, but more specifically a nuclear war. Although we have used the atomic bomb before in history, I feel like society has not realized the impact that it had on those families that were directly affected by radiation. What happens to the family if an even more powerful weapon is produced and used? Could we be so naïve to not even consider the personal devastation that it would impose on everyone in the world? I believe that one day someone will act rashly and potentially cause the end to human existence. We seem to be so concerned with advancing ourselves, yet we always forget that sometimes the most important place to advance ourselves is within our home and community. This is especially apparent in America because Americans tend to be extremely competitive. If we aren’t the first ones to develop something or accomplish something than we need to be the one who did it the best or the fastest. We need to find some way to be placed in that number one position. By focusing on being the best and being first, we will forget about our families, and in doing so, most likely end them. It is scary to me to think that a device such as in this movie could come into existence, and we could lose everything that we often times forget as being the most important aspects in our lives.
