Homogamy

Homogamy refers to the marriage of two like individuals. The individuals are alike because of their cultures, their economic classes, their genders, their ethnicities, and/or their belief systems. It’s a partnership built on similar interests or lifestyles that most likely occurs because we typically socialize with those who are similar to ourselves. We associate ourselves with like-classes and those who agree with us on many issues in life. It’s a common sense of security and self when homogamy occurs because we choose who we want to be with in marriage and partnerships. Overall, homogamy most likely occurs because we bond and form relationships with people who share the same beliefs as us and agree with major life issues or opinions.

  1. This is very interesting as well. I would like to also point out another part of homagamy that occurs in the southern hemisphere for the upward mobility of social class. This occurs in the Caribbeans and Latin America. A good example of this occurs in Haiti and the Dominican Republic (two countries that share the island of Hispanoila). In the D.R. dark or even black skin is looked down upon and Spanish/white descent is seen as higher status--also known as Hispanidad. Within this case, people marry those who either have lighter skin or are in the same family (endogamy). I know this isn't in the U.S. but I just think its an interesting side note.

  2. I would like to make one correction. Hispanidad pertains to the whitening or purifying of the Spanish/White heritage and blood. This is why people marry within thier own, Spanish family or with another Spanish (light skinned) person. The fact that lightening of the skin is looked up uppon in Latin America and the Caribbeans is also seen through people living there to bleech thier skin. (Has anybody seen how Sammy Sosa looks lately compared to his days playing for the Chicago Cubs? You may be surprised).
