Ring Discussion
After class today on my walk home I remembered something that my mother had told me when I was little. She told me that in the past when you became engaged that you wanted a big diamond because if your husband ever left you, you would have a way to be financially stable. Of course this has changed over the years because now society is very individualistic. Today most women have their own form of income and are financially stable without having to rely on a man. More and more women have college degrees and a college education to back their names up which means that there are more job opportunities than there would have been in the past. Perhaps today we have this notion of the bigger the diamond the more the man loves you, but I feel like that stems from this old ideal anyway. If a man didn't want to spend the money on a large diamond for you he might have been stating that he knew this relationship would not work out and that he would not want to risk losing that investment if he decided to be unfaithful. Regardless of whether this is the case, I think it is still interesting to look at how the paradigm has shifted and what we now think of as being the reasoning behind a large diamond.
