Chapter 8: Choosing Others

Chapter 8.

(Choosing Others)

Summary:

Chapter dives right into the dating scene by defining ‘dating’ itself. It is the process of meeting people socially for possible mate selection. Dating still is popular among adults, but its process is what varies. The author connects dating to a marriage market if you may where participants ‘compare assets/ liabilities of eligible partners for the best chose. This is the original thought of how we mentally date. The reasons why we dare are as stated before, somewhat variable, especially to each other.

It states that dating fulfills important manifest functions: Maturation, fun, companionship, love, affection and selection.

Also latent functions: Socialization, social status, ego necessities, sexual experimentation, intimacy and big business.

There is said to be traditional dating which we all know as the structured rules of dating. Guy picks up girl, opens door, ect. There are defined gender roles. Now with contemporary dating, it is much more casual. Terms like hanging out, hooking up and talking are commonly used and understood by todays culture. Combinations of said dating can be in the form of maybe prom and homecoming parties of the old fashion dinner date. The chapter goes on to elaborate on the different types of dating, different types of ways to day which can physical, electronic or through the media.

New & interesting info:

In Latino culture and communities, they usually have something called a quineanera. This is coming of age rite celebrating a girls entrance into adulthood which usually occurs on their 15th birthday.

Question: According to the chapter, people date in different fashions. DO you think because of the rise in internet dating, that we have become more impersonal and have lost our common touch with each other?
