Chapter 7

Summary:
In this chapter, the author discussed the various ways that sexuality is manifested and the social factors that shape it. She spent a great deal of time talking about how our sexual behavior is influenced by outside factors such as parents, peers, and gender roles. She also talked about the different views of sexuality across the stages of life, dwelling on teen and college-age perceptions. She finished the chapter by talking about homosexual relationships and how their sexual behavior is viewed and the prevalence of STI's.

New Thing:
One thing that the author mentioned that I wasn't aware of was the amount of different factors that affect the sexuality of young teens. I had thought of peer and media pressure, but the differing degrees to which parental attention and religiosity affected the time when teens had their first sexual experience surprised me.

Discussion Question:
As I was reading, I was wondering what everyone thought of the author's insistence that the degree of acceptance of homosexuality varies across the world. While I do know that there has been a variation, she really only provided examples of negative reactions. I wanted to see if anyone else knew cultures that accepted homosexuality as normal.
