2.) On page 178, the book discusses Grey’s Anatomy. One episode presented a fact – an HIV positive woman who gets the proper treatment has more than a 90% chance of having a healthy baby. Viewers’ awareness of this fact quadrupled (from 15% to 61%) after the episode aired. I found it interesting how the book shows that the media can sometimes be a good source for sexual information. You usually hear about all the misinformation that the media portrays of sex but to read something positive about it was rather refreshing.

3.) Now, flipping the script on what I just said, the book brings up a good discussion point on page 191. The show Desperate Housewives often focuses largely on extramarital sex. It’s been a hit since the show began in 2004, why is this? This is the question I pose to the class: why do you think television shows that feature infidelity are sometimes a favorite?

  1. I was also wondering the question of why these shows are hits. The only thing I can think of is that people usually love "drama". If they had a show of "boring" housewives where there is not as much drama I don't think it would be as successful.

  2. Kazzandra,

I think that there is almost a Freudian aspect to why we watch and enjoy shows like Desperate Housewives that feature infidelity. What I mean is that watching shows like this that display so openly things that we as a society find so unacceptable, allows us to almost live out those forbidden behaviors. It is not societally acceptable to cheat on your husband but it is almost a relief to watch someone else having fun and doing it without any consequences.

  4. I actually just started watching Desperate Housewives and I can't get enough of it! I am not sure why exactly these shows are so intriguing. Maybe for me it's because it portrays a life that I am not around. All the "drama" involving the lives of these women is so far from what I am use to that I find it entertaining to watch. It brings about a type of drama that people may not be use to, and like Ali said, it may be almost a relief to watch someone else having fun and doing it without consequences.

  5. In my opinion, Desperate Housewives is a popular show because the show always keeps the audience in suspense or always has some form of drama. I am sure the show isn't hurting any by having a variety of attractive women and men on the show along with some celebrity guest.

With that being said, I feel that people like to observe things that are perhaps said to be forbidden. People who watch "the forbidden" also know the consequences of their actions without having to face any punishment. The punishment if any is more of a guilt for doing something that might be felt as wrong.
